  • Question on how to render and play

Posted by Terry Esslinger on May 24, 2007 at 3:52 pm

If I am making a presentation that is about half stills (but with panning etc) and half video (but with not much motion such as interviews) and it is going to be presented via a projector from a Dell laptop my questions are.

    1. What format should I render it on the computer for display. I have VLC player, WM player and Quicktime player. What format will yield the cleanest most glitchfree presentation. And what settings? Interlaced or not etc?

    2. Would it be better to render it out to DVD (MPEG2) and play the DVD either on the laptop or a settop DVD player?

    3. The laptop has VGA, DVI and SVideo out. All of which the projector can receive. Would one be better than another?

    Thanks for your help.

    I think I’d just make a DVD.

OK Edward, lets add a wrinkle…

You want to do a SDE and there is very little time allowed. Basically you don’t have time to make a DVD. You barely have time to add the SDE material to the preproduced material that you have on your timeline. Besides not getting into this position in the first place, how would you handle this?
And do you have any suggestions about the connections?
Thanks for the reply. You are always quick. Must be closely attached to your computer!

Only use DVD if you are bringing your OWN dvd player and are able to test it all the way through prior to your presentation.

Render to an AVI full quality on your laptop as a backup. Play it through on your laptop ahead of time, and dont have any other programs open.

In that case, I would probably do a full render to DV-AVI and then do a PTT from either:

    Vegas
    Vegas Vidcap
    Scenalyzer Live

To be honest, in this case I’d probably pick Scenalyer Live first.

OK, I’ve seen several people mention Scenalyser. Maybe you can tell me how it would help here. Doing a little research it appears to be a capture utility, and apparently a pretty good one. However my video will be acquired via a Firestore, so for all intents and purposes it will be captured already. I just need to import it into Vegas for necessary editing. And then output it for delivery. I believe you have suggested PTT. Do you mean actually printing to tape (miniDV) and playing it into the projector from a camera or deck? Is there some trick that Scenalyser will perform here?
    Thanks for the information.
I never really looked at Scenelyzer before as I have never had any problem with the Vegas carture program.

Does it make any difference what player I use? I know what you mean about DVD/player compatability. But will the DVD (MPEG2) format be as good a resolution as say the avi from the computer and what about the connections from computer to projector?
    Thanks for the reply.

Scenalyzer is very light-weight. Plus, it won’t render the audio before outputting (the newer versions of Vegas don’t either, though). Basically, it’s just a load the clip into Scenalyzer and push “Play”.

You could easily just do a Print to Tape in Vegas, though, to achieve the same results.

Either way, you’ll need a pass-thru device to go from firewire to analog for your display device.

    Terry,

I would print to tape (back to DV tape) my project and playout to my projector from there using the S-Video connection. You did not mention the audio portion, make sure you have the proper cables and connectors to interface your audio.

    Regards, Rick.
