  • Question on DV Workflow

THE QUESTION: With a completely DV/DVCAM workflow via Firewire, would a Decklink or Aja card offer any speed improvements in effect render time? i.e. would the Aja card offer assistance in a color correction if my target output is QuickTime and DVCAM tape archive? What and how could I gain from the use of one of these cards?

THE BACKGROUND: We currently use Premiere Pro 1.5 on Pentium 4 laptops with Maxtor USB/FW400 external drives, but spend most of our time rendering the simplest effects, like color correction or 16×9-to-4×3 crops. So much time, that it has become exceptionally frustrating.

We have decided to purchase two full-service NLE systems to improve productivity, and are leaning toward Final Cut Pro Studio, complete with Quad G5, 4GB RAM, 500 GB SATA HD, NVidia 7800 256MB graphics, and 23″ cinema display. Additionally, we plan to purchase dedicated DVCAM DSR-11 decks and NTSC monitors. All video is destined for the web in a 16×9 aspect, but is to be archived in broadcast quality on tape. HD is not a requirement at this time. Uncompressed SD is also not a requirement, as DV-AVI is of sufficient quality.

For you the cards won’t really help. Final Cut Studio, however, on a half decent G5 system will provide you with PLENTY of real-time color correction, 16:9 cropping, etc…. so on a Quad G5 it will be impressive.

Charlie is correct, but what a card, say a Kona LH will do is allow you to work with SD and HD footage in the future, also pretty nice to monitor After Effects if you use that.

    Have a wonderful day.
