  • Question on bringing 5.1 audio into Premiere.

Hi, I created a clip in Audition that has sound only in the rear channels. Exported it, tried it in Windows Media and it worked fine.
Brought it into Premiere and it acts as a stereo clip. I’ve read the manual and the help files, which talk about a tray that appears in the mixer window to control the surround audio field. The tray isn’t there.
The following is from the help file.

The tray depicts the two-dimensional audio field created by 5.1 surround audio. You slide a puck within the tray to pan or balance audio among the five speakers, which are represented by pockets around the edge of the tray. The tray also includes controls for adjusting a 5.1 surround audio track’s center channel percentage and subwoofer volume. No pan control appears if a track outputs to a submix or master track that contains the same number of channels or fewer; therefore, a pan or balance control is never available for a 5.1 surround track. A master track doesn’t contain a pan or balance control because it is never routed to another track. However, panning or balancing an entire sequence is possible when you use the sequence as a track in another sequence.

I’m confused. Can I bring the clip I made into Premiere and have it come out of just the rear channels. I appreciate the help and hope I haven’t missed something glaringly obvious.

Your sequence needs to have a 5.1 master audio track. You can create a new sequence if necessary and nest your current sequence inside of that. Or simply copy and paste your clips into the new sequence.

Hmmm… okay, Bill, I just re-read your original post. Are you saying that when you drop the clip into the timeline, it goes into a stereo track and not a 5.1 track? How did you encode the audio out of Audition?

Timothy, Thanks for responding. No it went into a 5.1 track, but the clip didn’t play through the rear speakers only. It plays through front and rear speakers. When I play the clip in windows media it plays in the rear speakers only. This is my first attempt at using Audition and Premiere and I assumed that I would be able to just drop the clip into Premiere and it would function as it did in Audition. I’m unclear as to how to create the 5.1 master track as suggested. Would I have to do that for each 5.1 clip or only once. I appreciate your helping me with this and your time.

Thanks for the clarification, Bill. One question that still needs answering- what type of file did you create from Audition?

More info on master tracks: Each sequence in Premiere Pro can have only one master track, and you can’t change how many channels the track has after it’s created. By default, you probably started your project with a stereo master track.

So what you need to do is create a new sequence. File > New > Sequence. It will give you some settings options, including what kind of master track to use.

Now drop your 5.1 track into the sequence. If you still don’t hear it playing back as expected, you may need to set up the audio channels in Premiere’s preferences. Edit > Preferences > Audio Hardware. If your sound card is listed under the Input/Output Device menu, choose it. If not, leave it on “Adobe Default Windows Sound”. Then play with the icons in the 5.1 column to assign them to the correct channels on your audio card. Depending on the card, this may or may not be the most obvious thing, but keep playing with it and you should be able to figure it out.
