Hi, I was reading your article in cow magazine regarding using Compressor to encode 5.1, but in the article you say to choose DOLBY DIGITAL 2.0 as the preset. This is not 5.1, it is 2 channel. Am I missing something in your article?

Also, when I do encode 5.1 with 3/2 channel configuration and 5.1 output selection, the audio levels seem to be lowered when played back through the 5.1 encoder and speakers. Any thoughts?

    Thanks

There is a mistake in that article Damon. You’re supposed to click on the “Add Surround” icon at the top of the Compressor window. It’s been a long time since that article was published, and you’re the first whose ever pointed it out. Not a lot of people making 5.1 DVDs I guess?

In any case, the point of the article was to suggest that readers mix at a 5.1 mix facility, and then use the 6 tracks from the facility to author their 5.1 DVDs in Compressor.

    Got it?

Level changes are likely to be caused by the Dolby presets having a value for Dialog Normalisation and also possibly dynamics compression.

Changing the dialog norm to -31 effectively stops the Dolby decode chip from changing levels.

Thank you.. I will change Dialogue normalization to -31.
