  • Question for Andrew Kramer or anyone else who can…

    Hi Andrew,
I saw your FPS converter tutorial over at video copilot and it was great. I was wondering though, is there a way that I can achieve the look of 24p from 29.97 NTSC, but still be able output to a 29.97 fps video file for DVD (as DVD’s only accept 29.97, right)?

    Thanks,
    Alexander Gao

Back in the day, before I had magic bullet, the following was my recipe that I found worked for me…

Video is set to lower field de-interlace in interpret footage dialog.

Comp 1 (video is placed in this comp) frame rate set at 60
comp 2 (comp 1 is placed in this comp) frame rate set at 29,97
comp 3 (comp 2 is placed in this comp) frame rate set at 23.976

For a better film look, in comp 3 I liked to to duplicate the comp 2 layer and use the Meyer’s instant sex method, using an adjustement layer over top to control levels and also to add noise.

Now add comp 3 to the render queue and make sure field render is set to lower, and that you select 3:2 pulldown (select the last option in the pulldown).

This will usually create pretty nice results, although I have had some issues with certain DV video. Magic bullet does a superb job of this.

    Hope this helps

Most new DVD players will play 23.976 fps burned DVDs and will just replicate frames to add in the pulldown frames. You gain 3% more playing time.

DVDs do play 23.976( probably the best choice too) but if you need a 29.97 dvd, add a pulldown to the 24p footage in AE. When you render add a pull-down and it will make the 24p fit into a 29.97 comp.

    I hope this helps,
    Andrew
