  • Question about video borders and event pan/crop

Posted by Jessica Beasley on September 9, 2009 at 2:48 pm

I’m new to Sony Vegas and have encountered a couple of problems. Firstly, I tried to put a video on the timeline. It’s original format was widescreen and I wanted to make it full screen to go with the rest of my video. I managed to adjust it using the event pan/crop and changing the borders to full screen. However, it is slightly blurry and cut off part of the screen. Is there anyway to do this without making it blurrier or chopping off the screen? I have seen the video I’m using on you tube where the editor has managed to achieve full screen without the blurred effect as far as I can see.

Another problem I’m having is with the pan/crop features. I resized all my pictures so that they would fit into SV properly. However, I’ve noticed when I try and pan and crop, by dragging the arrows, rather than having the zoom effect it creates a big border (on the sides and the tops.) Do I have it on the wrong setting or have I done something wrong with the pictures? It won’t seem to let me pan/crop in a normal way.

Another issues as well is if I create a key frame and then set it to slow by right-clicking on it and selecting ‘slow’ it still zooms in VERY fast and back out and looks extremely unprofessional and shaky. How do I fix this? Is there something I’m missing?

Part 1: Zooming-in will reduce quality. If you have enough resolution to start with this is not a problem. You will also chop off video. So, use higher resolution and larger material.

Part 2: To pan/crop you need to have material remain within the Frame. The Frame you move is like the Frame of a Camera. Move the Frame Left and your material moves Right. Move it far enough you leave the material behind! So, use material that is larger than the Frame.

Part 3: Your Keyframes are too close together. So, extend the Event and try again.

Thanks. A couple of questions in response:

    1) The video I’m using is just some footage off youtube. Therefore I assume I can’t make the source material larger or the resolution higher, because it’s just as it comes, right?

    2) How do I find out how large the frame is?

    1 – Yes

2 – The/your video in Pan/Crop workspace are the dimensions you get to manipulate.

Do you mean the width/height positions under pan/crop? And if so by what do I need to manipulate the width/height by in order to make the material bigger than the frame? I did notice that when I pan in if I click ‘No’ under ‘maintain aspect ratio’ then I don’t have that problem of borders when panning in. However, I’ve come across a few problems when panning out.

#1 I assume that when you pan out your start point has to already be a picture/video that is somewhat zoomed in, in order for you to pan out to the full photo?

#2 Assuming the above method is correct, I’ve found a few problems with it. I key frame my video so it starts zoomed in, and then key frame it so that it’ll zoom out slowly. However, it looks very strange when it zooms out, almost like it expanding, rather than zooming out and the overall look it quite unprofessional. Any ideas why this would be and how to fix it?

If the material isn’t big enough, then you are hobbled with what you have.

    #1 Yes

#2 This will be a result of the resolution of the material you are using.

Ok. So do I need to make the resolution bigger or smaller in order to stop this problem? And can I do that in something like photoshop or even on vegas itself?

I’m really not sure I understand your problem anymore.

Well I seem to be able to pan inwards without problems. And on certain pictures I can do the same outwards. But in some it looks odd, as I explained. You said it is a result of the resolution of the material I’m using. So basically do I just need to change the resolution of the pictures? And if so, do I need to make the resolution higher or lower in order to stop this problem?

As far as panning/cropping goes it seems to be able to do it inwards now. However, if I try and do a sideways pan or something I get the black borders or an entirely black window. You said I need to use material that is larger than the frame, so does this just mean bigger pictures?

Ignore the second question – I figured that out. It’s just the first question which is troubling me now i.e pic resolution.
