  • Question about transcoding

I have a 5minute video in PAL DV Widescreen and I need to upload it to Vimeo. The problem is the video is 1,2 GB. So I need to shrink it (because my Vimeo limit is 500MB). I tried to use MainConcept AVC, progressive, resolution same as the original and variable bit rate (8-16 000 000 bps), but the result is not so sharp as the original. It little bit blurry. What should I do?

Vegas deinterlacer is the problem, imho.

I’m using other tools for deinterlacing and upscaling my PAL Widescreen videos before uploading them to Vimeo/Youtube or editing in Vegas.

P.S. I’m using SimpleSlugUpscale (it uses AVISynth with some plugins and VirtualDub). If you upload somewhere a piece of your source I can upscale it with this technique for you. After that you will decide if it worth to use it or not.

PAL DV Widescreen has non-square pixel aspect ratio (PAR = 1,4568)
If you want 16:9 you should render as 640×360 PAR 1.0 (with a little cropping) or you can upscale video to 1280×720.

Actually, I tried to upload the original PAL DV Widescreen file to YouTube and the result was sharp as the original. The Only problem was flattened image because of non-square pixel aspect ratio.

The other thing I noticed is that the video uploaded on the Vimeo has much more contrast then the original file (the highlights seems to bee little bit overexposed and the shadows crushed).

Is this the method you were talking about Mikhail?

    Nope. I use another workflow:
    1. Upscale all my SD videos using SimpleSlugUpscale (I simplified process by integrating all _my_ typical settings into simple bat-script and adding an action button on Total Commander toolbar)
    2. Edit resulting videos in Vegas

Both workflows use the same AviSynth/QTGMC deinterlacer (+noise remover).
