Activity Forums VEGAS Pro Question about syncing tracks on time line

  • Question about syncing tracks on time line

Posted by William Mims on March 8, 2010 at 7:39 pm

    Question about sync:
On track 1, I have insert shots, no audio. Track 2 is my main video track (talking head) and track 3 is talking head’s audio. If I change or subtract various insert shots on track 1, the remaining inserts on track 1 jump ahead (or move back), making them out of sync on the the original time line. In film cutting lingo I would say my insert track is now ‘our of sync’. How do I subtract or change the length of my insert shots without changing the position of later inserts on the time line? I want to lock all of the inserts in their position so the shots match the talking head’s words no matter how I alter various insert shots along the middle of track 1’s time line.
I can not find an answer to that within the Help option. For those of us who came out of film cutting rather than computers, it would be so nice if Sony would make a Vegas version with words like Sync lock or unlock instead of Group and ungroup, Path, File, Folder -these are all words that have no meaning to me. To me, those are business office terms(Windows) not editing terms. I miss ‘trim bin’, sound roll, picture roll, splice, sync. Someone please write a tutorial for us old guys!
Meanwhile, thanks for any help from you.

Sounds like you have Auto Ripple on. Control+L will toggle it on/off or go to the Options tab.

Thanks James, that helped one aspect of being able to bring new insert shots into my track 1 time line by toggling in and out of that- however I still need to lock track 1 shots to track 2’s time line so that if I move track 2 and 3(audio) the track 1 shots stay locked to 2, just as the audio on 3 stays with 2 and therefore stays in sync with the picture. Is there a way to keep inserts in sync with the audio on 3, for example?
    Thanks.

    AHHHH!
I think I found it: Switches, then lock as you point to each insert shot, providing the main time line is also locked, correct?

Sorry Mims but that would be incorrect.
You “lock” an event when you don’t want it to be able to move anywhere, no matter what you try t do to it.
I think what you want to do is to “Group” these events together.
Click and shift+click the relevant clips and then press the G key to Group them together.
That way, if you move any one of them, the rest will automatically follow.

Mike is right, you want to group these events together. Also with the Auto-Ripple function, you typcially will want to leave this off. You can get into big problems if it’s accidentally left on and then you realize later that your timeline is all outta whack.

“Also with the Auto-Ripple function, you typcially will want to leave this off. You can get into big problems …”

As someone who once got burned big time (had to re-do a LOT of edits!!), I concur whole-heartedly!!
Learn about post-edit ripple as it’s MUCH safer.

Glad I read this post. My series for PBS has to be 26:40 for each episode and when building the project I’m always scrolling to the end to check to see at what point my time ending is. The LOCK feature (which I never used before) will let me lock my last credit clip right at 26:40 and I can build to there without it moving.
    Great solution. Thanks
