  • Question about scaling up footage

Posted by Paul Campbell on March 24, 2009 at 9:15 pm

I spent some time recently on a thread about properly converting 720×486 to 720×480 for the purposes of creating a DVD. I learned that since all SD DVD’s are 720×480, if you try using a 720×486 timeline for your DVD, you’ll end up losing 6 lines, and that if you’re not careful, you’ll possibly introduce a field shift and screw things up.

Since then, I do my work in a 720×480 timeline, but some of the elements that I’m dropping into my timeline are 1920×1080 (from an XDCAM). FCP automatically scales my footage down to 37.5 so that it all fits. I don’t mind the letterboxing, but if I wanted to scale things up a bit (to 42 perhaps…I don’t mind losing the stuff on either end of the shots), do I have to worry about causing field shifts? Or is one not related to the other?

They are not related Paul, but if something goes awry and you somehow wind up with the improper filed order on a clip, blowing things up typically will make that more obvious than normal.

Thanks, David. I don’t think there’s a problem with any of my stuff initially, but just wanted to make sure.

Gotcha! It’s always good to know so you don’t have to think about these things if it’s not really necessary.
