  • Question about quality of bit rate on GH5

Do you really have the feeling that 400Mbps is actually enough information for 4K ? It seems to me that since HD on the GH5 is 200 Mbps, 4 K should be around 800Mbps to carry enough information. Is the 4 K mode on the GH5 just a commercial gimmick? Do you think it’s suited for decent color grading?

That is a difficult question to answer without more info. Generally, customer requirements will dictate the bit rate needed. The final use of the footage would be important to know. For example, if you are shooting footage to upload to You Tube, a high bit rate is always dumbed down by YT. If you are shooting commercials for a local TV station, then you need to check with the station for their requirements.

Bit rate affects the visual quality of the image more than it does the color data. To get proper color data there are many other settings that must also be properly set. At the very least you need to capture 10 bit 4.2.2 color data for most applications.

If your customer has higher data requirements, you cannot do this in a GH5 in camera. You will need to record into an external device. The new GH6 does allow in camera Pro Res recording.

Yes, I’m aware of what the GH6 can do. As for the GH5 I’m not talking about bit rate for uploading, I’m asking whether or not what the GH5 offers in 4 K is enough for serious color grading. Yes, eventually all decent hybrid cams will have prores or raw.

I recently upgraded from GH5s to GH6s, and I’ll state that I never had issues grading 4K from the GH5s, for television broadcast. Loved those cameras.
