  • Question about Panasonic HDX900 recording length

Posted by Dan Riley on August 15, 2007 at 3:56 am

There is confusion between vendors and tape sellers about how long
of a recording I can get with HD using this camera. If someone who has one
or uses one regularly can answer this question:
What is the recording length I can get using the medium cassette
(the largest one that fits the camera) recording at 100 mbps HD?

Some say 16 minutes, some say 33 minutes, some say 66 minutes.
Some say 33 minutes if I use LP mode (what’s that? )
Some say no, you get 66 minutes because the camera has new heads now ???
What the heck is everyone talking about?

On the Panasonic site is says maximum time is 33 minutes.
It doesn’t say anything about LP Mode (is this a lower quality recording).

Very confusing. We have a shoot coming up where the director what to use
this camera but doesn’t know much about it himself.

    Thanks if you can help.

33 minutes. You use the small yellow 66 tapes and you can shoot approx. 33 minutes, actually more like 31 minutes and 30 seconds.

We have edited multiple projects shot with the 900 and the difference is you can record 33 minutes on the 66 (small) yellow tapes. With the Varicam you needed to load 126 (large) yellow tapes to record 33 minutes. The 900 does have new heads, but it’s to allow the longer records on smaller tapes.

    Thanks Walter.
When you say small yellow cassette, do you happen to mean the medium size
cassette? That’s what I’m told to buy. The medium 66 min, AJ-P66M.

Yes. Use the medium 66 tape.
