Question About on the Fly Editing
This project is all about saving time, editing on the fly to upload edited footage, producing a condensed summary of an indy race to upload as quickly as possible from the track to our website.
Project: Filming indy races with up to 8 cameras. My plan is to capture the footage directly to laptops with external hard drives while placing markers at important spots in the footage manually in Avid Xpress Pro to save time on editing (with the exception of the 3 camera’s in the actual vehicles).
Question: Once we’ve compiled the key clips from each stationary camera with the complete unedited footage of the three in car cameras, assuming the footage timelines are synced, is there a way to edit all of the footage together by syncing up the timelines of all 8 footage sources? Basically this is to speed up the final compilation that will take place on the machine to upload the final compilation to the internet.
Keep in mind the cameras, software, and final editing machine (probably a MacPro) haven’t been purchased. This project is in the preproduction stages. If this approach seems inefficient, what approach would be more practical (cost wise and more importantly time wise)?

Sounds like live-switching would be the best way to go. You can record isos as a back up to cover any mistakes and that would be much quicker than a multicam session after the fact.
You could go with an old schol switcher to your avid or rethink it all and look at Newtek’s toys made for this.
That’s what I’d do.
