question about Nattress Standards Converter (G Add Pulldown) and velosity remapping
I’m currently editing a short film we shot on super 16mm and transfered to ntsc digibeta. I’m editing from a 23.98 timeline as I removed the pulldown in Cinema Tools. Since I haven’t bought my G5 yet and am editing from my Mini, I’m offlining the project at DV25. But eventually I’ll need to do the online with the digibeta material and will need to add pulldown when I make a digibeta tape for the film festival.
I believe I read that I’ll get a better conversion from my 23.98 to 29.97 by using the G Add Pulldown plugin from the Nattress Standards Converter package. Where things get tricky is I’ve sped up a few clips up using both FCP’s Velosity Remaper and the velosity remapper from Boris Red (which I added as a filter to my FCP timeline). What I was wondering was:1- Does the G Add Pulldown plugin give a better and cleaner conversion from 23.98 to 29.97 than FCP does?

2- Will either of my velosity remapping methods mess up my conversion to 29.97?I’ve tried reading up on these subjects, but am still in a bit of a quandry. So any help is greatly appreciated!

Actually, you’d want to use the Film Converter plugin in Standards Converter and it’s Film to NTSC option. This is because FCP cannot add 3:2 pulldown other than in real time out of firewire. Some SDI cards will also now add 3:2, but this was not always the case, so I’d check your SDI card and see what it does.
Due to changes in FCP 5, converter filters work best on a movie file and not on actual sequences (just have out the edit as a movie).

Very cool! Words from the man himself! Okay, so I’ll definitely buy the Standards Converter. I was just a little confused from the front page of your site under the 2.5 update that said, “…G Add Pulldown and G Remove Pulldown for working with 3:2 pulldown.” But no matter, so long as it’s in the Standards Converter package.
I was still wondering about what would happen with the footage I have sped up. Will adding velosity remapping from FCP or Boris create any problems when using your Standards Converter to export a 29.97 version of my 23.98 project?

Sped up stuff should be ok, but I’d check and see.
The new pulldown plugins are for different workflows to you, but can be useful and interesting.
