  • question about my intel imac before I screw it up….

Just got an intel imac, mainly to do mobile-editing (get a case for the thing and it can go anywhere!). I just finished installing my universal version of FCP studio. I haven’t worked on it yet, but am wondering if all of my plug-ins (magic bullet, nattress, etc.) will transfer over alright. Any of you have experience with this?

    Nattress filters work fine.

I’d check the website of all your various plug-in providers to check for universal updates to your plug-ins, or to see if they are already universal.
Out of curiosity… why the iMac for portable editing vs a Mac Book Pro? I would think price, and maybe screen size, but was wondering what your thinking is / was.

    Thanks,
    Zak

What else do you need? I just tried to configure an iMac and a Macbook Pro as closely as I could, spec-wise.

    The ONLY differences are these:

    * iMac has a 20″ screen to Macbook Pro’s 15″
    * Macbook Pro has a card slot
    * iMac has 250 GB hard drive to Macbook Pro’s 100 GB
    * Macbook Pro costs $425 more than iMac

If you take the computer with you eveywhere, moving all over, working in airports and on planes…then the laptop wins. But if you just bring it somewhere in the morning and just leave it set up all day…well, I’d call the iMac a winner. The screen speace alone makes it well worth the trouble of moving it in. I’ve taken my iMac places, it’s not a huge pain to move.

Yes, those above are why we use the imacs. We also display our edits on those screens (looping) and the imacs look sleeker and more “presentable” than a macbookpro. Plus the one I just got has a 500gb harddrive in it. Pretty cool!

I’ll buy that… was just curious. Honestly, I was hitting the post button right as I remembered that both machines use the same processor. Happens to the best of us I suppose… so I’m in the same boat with the best of us.

    Enjoy your new machine,
    Zak

I LOVE my iMac Intel. It would indeed be great for presentation. I put some cool pictures on the desktop of the 20″ screen and my 2nd flat-screen and they look like picture-frames. FCP seems to like it, too.

Had a weird problem with my Airport disappearing. I was sure it had built-in airport, but the profiler said there was no hardware detected. Thanks to a quick search of another online forum, I found I wasn’t the only one. A four-chime PRAM zap did the the trick and restored it.

No doubt, the iMac is amazing bang for the buck.
