  • Question about MPEG-2 and M2T

Posted by Jason Warfe on April 3, 2009 at 2:15 pm

If I change project settings in MPEG-2 to 1440×1080 and put the KBPS to 25,000,000 and aspect ratio to 16×9 isn’t that essentially the same thing as rendering to an M2T? What’s the difference between MPEG-2 and M2T? Is it just a different file type? Both can produce the same quality right? While I like the M2T file, it’s not very compatible with any other editing program at the moment.

No it is not the same thing. M2T uses a different profile and is a transport stream. If your other applications don’t support M2T files I would highly recommend that you use the CineForm AVI codec instead. You will need to at least purchase Neo Scene in order to use CineForm files in other programs but it is well worth the money if you are working with multiple applications in HD.

Thanks for the reply. So essentially M2T is higher quality, even with the same specs? I have noticed that MP4 and M2T export similar quality. I can handle M2T fine, it’s my Mac friends that can’t.

It’s not really the same specs but yes it is higher quality. There are different profiles that are applied to the MPEG video and SD and HD use different ones. Also, as I pointed out, your standard MPG files are stored as program steams and M2T is a transport stream. So there are several differences in how the video is stored and encoded between SD and HD.
