  • Question about mediafiles and projects.

Posted by Edward Calabig on September 21, 2011 at 4:19 am

I’m trying to backup my files and had a question regarding how media files are linked to projects.

Is all the information regarding cuts, sequences, subclips, bins, etc located in a space separate from the Avid mediafiles? If I lose the avid media files but retain the project settings, assuming I import the exact same file names into the projects, will my subclips, bins, etc, still be linked? It would be nice not to have to backup my avid media files folder on two separate drives (it takes up sooo much space!).

    Thanks!

No, do not lose your media files, that will cause an unnecessary amount of headaches. If all of your media was IMPORTED in the first place and you want to BATCH IMPORT, that is a different story. Avid Media files are located in the “Avid Mediafiles> MXF > 1” folder.

If you want to conserve space but still backup, you can use the CONSOLIDATE function, which means you take only the media used in your sequence, with handles of your choosing.

[Edward Calabig] “Is all the information regarding cuts, sequences, subclips, bins, etc located in a space separate from the Avid mediafiles?”

Yes. In the Avid Project file. ALWAYS keep that. Archive it.

[Edward Calabig] “f I lose the avid media files but retain the project settings, assuming I import the exact same file names into the projects, will my subclips, bins, etc, still be linked?”

Yes. Import from tapes or tapeless media. Just recapture/import and things should link up.

Backing up FULL media files for every project isn’t necessary. I only do it for projects that are constantly revisited.
