  • Question about Kona LHE capturing

Posted by Chris Borjis on April 28, 2008 at 7:52 pm

I’m looking into getting a Kona LHe for my edit 2 suite (frustrated with black magic) and I have a question on the
way it captures and the aja codecs.

on the black magic multibridge extreme I have, when I run a black magic easy setup, say for example:
Black Magic 10-bit or 8-bit Uncompressed, it actually captures the video as apple uncompressed 10-bit or 8-bit.

the only time I need to render to a black magic codec is if I’m rendering from After Effects or a pc.

So the question is, Do the Kona LH easy setups make it so one can capture apple 10-bit or 8-bit uncompressed video?

Or does it only capture in AJA specific 10-bit or 8-bit uncompressed.

Its vital that fcp projects from either room can be opened in the other without codec issues.

I should add that for the most part, we use ProRes HQ for SD work and DVCPRO-HD for HD work. We occasionally use uncompressed 10-bit for SD.

AJA uses the standard Apple 8 and 10bit Uncompressed codecs.

thanks for the quick response walter.

so I assume the aja specific version of the codec is for outside system rendering. (from a pc or a 3rd party/client for realtime playback of a deliverable)

The AJA codecs are MOSTLY used to 10bit RGB Log captures for dual link applications.

Then there’s also the cross platform functionality you have alluded to (capture on Mac, edit/composite on PC, finish back on Mac).

If you are staying on the Mac, might as well use the Apple codecs that the defualt easy setups use.
