  • Question about importing audio…

Posted by Lex Park on June 27, 2006 at 2:38 pm

A friend and I are swapping audio files to compose music together. Yesterday, I imported his main track that I was to record a bassline to. I recorded the bassline and sent it over to him for him to further work.
He gets back to me toady and says the bassline is much faster than the track, but when I recorded it, it was right in sync as far as bpms go.
I did some testing today and played his main track in Windows Media Player, and sure enough, it is much slower than it was playing back in Vegas.

My question… is there a way that Vegas can automatically set it’s bpm’s to match the file I’m importing, and override the default project settings? I know my friend can verify for me what the bpm’s were set at when he made it, and then I can manually adjust the project setting, but I was wondering if there is a way for Vegas to so this automatically.

    Thanks!

What format are the files, and how is he creating them?

They are .wav files created in ACID Pro 5.

Is it a case of Acid being set to 44.1 KHz while Vegas is at 48 KHz?

The sample rate of both, in this case, is this same… 44.1 KHz.

OK. I did a search for this problem and came up with a few suggestions. Hopefully one of them will help. BTW, which version and build of Vegas are you using?

Options – Prefs – Audio – Import audo at project tempo.
    Is this selected?

Change the Vegas project tempo to match the ACID file using
File > Properties > Ruler and change the project tempo.

Modify the properties of the audio event to ignore ACID properties (fixed with 5.0b update).

    I’m using Vegas 5

Hmmm… I don’t have the option to import audio at project tempo in Options>Prefs>Audio.

I have found this useful bit of info since searching myself:
“When you add an ACID loop to the timeline, it is automatically stretched to match the project tempo as specified on the Ruler tab of the Project Properties dialog.”

So it looks like I need to find out from my friend what tempo he used, then reset that in the project properties.

    Thanks for the help!

Hmmm… I don’t have the option to import audio at project tempo in Options>Prefs>Audio.

Are you running at least 5.0B (latest was 5.0D)?
The reason I ask is that this was a big fix.
    From the Readme:
An Import audio at project tempo check box has been added to the Audio tab of the Preferences dialog. When this check box is selected, ACID loops are automatically stretched to match the project tempo (specified on the Ruler tab of the Project Properties dialog) when you add them to the timeline or preview from the Explorer window. When the check box is cleared, tempo information is ignored.

Running 5.0a currently. I know, I should upgrade, but I’m moving over to Premeire and Audition very soon.

Thanks for the info, but I’m not sure that altering the tempo of the .acd file when imported would be good in this case, as I’m trying to match his ACID project’s tempo , not the other way around. So, it appears my best bet is to determine the tempo he used in his production, and match it in Vegas.

Thanks again for your attention to my quandary!

[foonshoe] “my best bet is to determine the tempo he used in his production,”

You should be able to right-click the event and see that information in Properties.

checking the audio event properties for his track… it’s not showing me the tempo (bpm) used. It does show me the time stretch/ pitch shift, along with original length and new length, etc, but no bpm info.
