  • Question about high-speed cameras

Posted by Alireza Kheirabadi on August 25, 2014 at 6:43 pm

Hi folks, not sure if this is the right place for posting this but heck, I couldn’t find anywhere better. 😛
So here is my question; I’d like to ask you professionals whats the best slow-mo camera with a budget of $10K in the market? I’ve looked some websites but couldn’t get the idea of the prices. for example there is Phantom cameras, Photron etc.
So, any suggestions? anyone experienced? maybe you can refer me to the proper place to ask my question.
    Thanks in advance.
    Regards,
    Alireza

Frankly I’m looking forward to something like 1920×1080 at 1000fps or maybe more 😛 but that works just fine. Thanks Dave.

You’d be better off renting a high speed camera than buying one.

And what if I raise the budget higher? like $20K or $30K? any solution?

You should contact Vision Research and/or Weisscam. There is the Edgertronic, which is pretty cheap, but it won’t do full HD.

Actually I think I need at least 2000fps at HD res. and Edgertronic is really lousy. how much budget should I have to get my hands on such cam? at least 2000fps in Full HD. Thanks again.

Vision or Weiss don’t advertise their prices on their website and you’ll have to contact them. If I’d had to ballpark I’d guess a new Phantom body might be closer to 100K USD.

Yeah 20000 fps at 1080p HD is will not even be close to $10-20k. As suggested you can rent for a single shoot, or if you insist on owning for < $20k my suggestion would be a camera like the Sony NEX FS700 which will shoot 1080p at 240fps. Use the fastest shutter speed you possibly can then do further slow motion via Twixtor in AE

Twixtor results don’t come even close to a proper high speed camera though.

I’ve seen a few impressive shots with Twixtor. You are definitely right though, nothing is like the real thing. I was merely suggesting an option for < $20k 🙂
