  • Question about Exporting r3d footage for VFX

    Hi,
I just finished a short film that was shot with red epic dragon, and we are now at the beginning of the post production stage. The issue is that the film’s theme is Sci-Fi and it’ll need some serious VFX work (about 200+ VFX shots), we wanted to export our raw footage to (EXR) but then the exporting firm we’re dealing with told us that we can’t export to EXR unless we downgraded our 5k resolution to 2k or lower; the other alternative would be to export to DPX which we didn’t want to as it’s color system only preserves 10 instead of 16 bits in EXR.

So it would be great if u can guide me on this matter, which extension is better quality wise, and if EXR has any resolution limitations or whatnot .. also which extension is better when it comes to color grading on Davinci’s resolve(pro), and why is it considered better to color grade DXP on Resolve than EXR(performance?).
