Question about Bob Zelins SAN article
Hey Bob, or to anyone who reads this…

Bob talks about purchasing a 4 port PCI-Express Ethernet card and using link aggregation for speed. But the article continues in saying that you take one ethernet cable and connect the server to the switch.
My question is- Am I reading that wrong? If its one cable connecting the computer to the switch then why is the 4 port card needed? Or do you actually run four cables from the card into a switch?
Just need a little clarification.

This article was written in April 2008. It is currently 2012. Do you know what 4 years is like in the computer business ? That article does not apply to today’s technology.
To be clear, in 2008 (which we NEVER do anymore), I used a 4 port ethernet card, and link aggregated all 4 ports together into a managed ethernet switch. Specifically, the 4 port card lived in the server, we setup link aggregation, and sent those 4 cables into a switch, where we link aggregated 4 ports in the switch.
then we ran SINGLE ethernet cables from the same switch to the individual client computers.
But that was in 2008. We NEVER EVER do this anymore. There are much better solutions for the same money.

I read that article with great interest a couple of years ago, so I’m eager to read, no matter how brief, your thoughts on what some of these better solutions might be.
