  • Question about animating matte/letterbox like opening effect?

Posted by Tony Bozani on April 30, 2014 at 9:24 pm

Hi – I’ve noticed that matte/mask effects have become popular in music video these days and I have spent a couple of hours scouring the internet to no avail for information on how these types of effects can be achieved. I’m relatively new to Premiere (switching from FCPX, yuck) so if this is an obvious solution I apologize.

The first effect I’d like to address is the opening effect in this video that can be seen at the 0:30 mark. The black “letterbox” bar pull out vertically leaving the main clip exposed. This is an effect I’ve seen in mainstream movies before too as an opening. I’ve tried searching for ‘letterbox animation’ ‘matte animation’ effects, but couldn’t figure how to animate a black matte to make a transition like this.

The other effects scattered around the video involve maskings and mattes i’m pretty sure where several clips are cropped apart to set up multiple clips in the same sequence (seen at 1:00 and throughout the entire video). I wasn’t too sure what keywords to search for in google to find out more about this effect. If anyone could lead me in the right direction that would be incredible and much appreciated!

Ok – so since I posted this, I figured out how to do the first effect used the Crop effect and keyframes. I guess much of the rest of the videos multi-clips in one shot sequences are accomplished using the Crop tool creatively. If anyone else wants to add a way to accomplish this using an easier workflow, otherwise I think I’m on the right track..

I’d use the titler to make a black rectangle that was wider than the screen and place it top and bottom when you want the crop and keyframe their motion to pull them out.

The other stuff is cropping with mattes.

Thanks TimK~ Seems like as I get more into Premiere, a lot of these powerful music video effects can be achieved with just a little ingenuity and knowledge of track matte.
