Question about Angle Map/ UV Transform/ Lookup Transform for remapping a reflect
Hi everyone, i recently saw a project on behance by Martin Naumann.
In the project he has a decription of his process of creating chromatic reflections on shapes.
Essentially what it is is taking an spherical map and remapping it to the shape of the letter instead of the traditional way of putting an image behind the letter and distorting it. Doing this lets you remap values so that sides that face the same angle have the same image reflected – you can see in the shape in the center – the sides in the red reflect the same side of the image , as do the sides in the yellow and in the center you can see the entire spherial map remapped to the shape.
Traditionally you can also do that with a UV pass (the red yellow green one) from a 3d render.
But what was interesting to me was what is described in step 1 . I have never heard of an angle map in black and white. And I have no idea how one could create such a map in photoshop or after effect other than using the Bevel in the blend mode, but the results are not quite similar.
Also what is decribed in step 3 is a “kind of UV Mapping/Lookup Transformation” does anyone know how to do that in after effects or photoshop . I assume it is a plug in but i couldnt find anything.
So my question is – what is an angle map and how do you do uv mapping/look up transformations on a black and white map instead of a UV Pass. Does it have some thing to do with tinting the Black and white image in the red yellow green values and using a traditional UV Pass?
