question about after effects
I have after effects CC. When ever I select an effect and drag it onto the clip, it would just play the effect over a black screen. How do I play the effect with the clip at the same time? Thanks in advance.

Ok, so I drag my video clip into project and then I create a composition of that clip in the timeline. Then I drag particle world onto the clip. Particle world would play over a black screen and you see a grid. How do I get particle world to play on the actual clip?

Apply the Particle World effect to a solid (Layer –> New –> Solid). Do not apply this effect to the clip itself. Add the solid with the Particle World effect to the layer above your clip.
If you already applied the Particle World effect to your clip, then cut and paste the effect from your clip to the new solid.
