[Daryl Booth] “What is the best output for burning to DVD.”
Standard definition DVDs will only accept MPEG-1 or MPEG-2 as a video stream… and MPEG-2 is a much better choice. However, your workflow from AE will vary. You might want to render out lossless from AE to have the highest quality digital master you can, then use a program such as Sorenson Squeeze or Apple’s Compressor to compress the lossless file to MPEG-2. This also leaves you the option of compressing the same master into H.264 or WMV for web distribution.
That said, you can also render MPEG-2 directly out of AE, but this should only be considered a viable option if you have limited hard drive space or are only rendering DVD menus (which will probably never be distributed in another format). The MPEG-2 encoder that ships with AE is a good one, but it limits your workflow options.
[Daryl Booth] “Also which software do you use/reccommend on using to burn the resulting file onto dvd? “
I use DVD Studio Pro, but if you’re talking about WMVs my guess is you’re on a PC. In that case I would recommend looking at some of Sonic’s products: https://www.sonic.com/
