  • Query on outputting to DVD

Posted by Daryl Booth on March 28, 2008 at 11:19 pm

    Hi all,

I am in the process of finishing up a project. I want the end result to go onto a DVD. Thus far I have only usually bother to output as WMV for youtube etc etc.. What is the best output for burning to DVD.

Also which software do you use/reccommend on using to burn the resulting file onto dvd?

    TIA

[Daryl Booth] “What is the best output for burning to DVD.”

Standard definition DVDs will only accept MPEG-1 or MPEG-2 as a video stream… and MPEG-2 is a much better choice. However, your workflow from AE will vary. You might want to render out lossless from AE to have the highest quality digital master you can, then use a program such as Sorenson Squeeze or Apple’s Compressor to compress the lossless file to MPEG-2. This also leaves you the option of compressing the same master into H.264 or WMV for web distribution.

That said, you can also render MPEG-2 directly out of AE, but this should only be considered a viable option if you have limited hard drive space or are only rendering DVD menus (which will probably never be distributed in another format). The MPEG-2 encoder that ships with AE is a good one, but it limits your workflow options.

I use DVD Studio Pro, but if you’re talking about WMVs my guess is you’re on a PC. In that case I would recommend looking at some of Sonic’s products: https://www.sonic.com/

Many thanks for the quick reply. I will look into the products you have mentioned.

Which file type is the best to output from AE for burning to DVD; Quick time/Avi/WMV/MPG2? I am a bit lost with all the varying factors on this subject matter and want to avoid wading through endless pages on the net on compression/cbr/multipass etc etc..

Many thanks by the way Darby
