Activity Forums Apple Final Cut Pro Legacy Quality of QT

  • Posted by Bill Grist on September 12, 2009 at 4:10 pm

I think I’m being dumb, but I export a movie in QT and make a DVD of it.

Quality is good. But if I pay the actual QT movie the quality is poor.
    Am I missing something?

I ask because an AV company told me to bring the movie in QT.

[Bill Grist] “Am I missing something?”

    Yes, information,

What type of QT, how was it made, how are you viewing the quality, what do you need to do with this QT.

    DV in.

    Setting all for PAL DV.

Export “As QT Movie” OR with setting Conversion, all set to DV PAL.

Essentially I THINK that all settings are consitent through the process.

DVD’s are as sharp as you would expect from DVC, pretty good.

If I play the QT on any computer including my iMAC the quality is significantly worse than the DVD quality.

I do not have QT pro as I bought it but the system wont see it….

If you have FCP installed you should have QT Pro unlocked.

DV never looks too good on the Computer. It needs to be look at an external monitor to guide the quality. If you are getting good results for the m2v video on a DVD it is reasonable to assume that the QT DV is a bit better, since it has not goes through the extra compression step.

    Michael, (and others)
DV (and some other codecs) contains a flag in QT where you can set the display quality. It was used in the old days to insure smooth playback over display quality.

Dive into QT pro, ask properties for the video track and you can alter it.

There were a few apps that actually used the settings, not sure if they still exists. But to be on the save side, switch it anyways if in doubt.
If you have a lot to do, this util can do it for you in batch.
