  • Quality loss? ProRes to ProRes

Posted by Zack Braff on August 20, 2008 at 11:31 pm

    Hi All-
My question is about re-encoding and quality loss. I have converted some AVCHD footage from an HG-10 into ProRes via Log and Transfer (ProRes HQ is not an available option). As it was shot via Canon’s 24p setting, I will be running it through Apple’s suggested Compressor work-flow for the Canon HV20. Now the question: is there any quality lost re-outputting to 8-bit ProRes when doing Compressor’s format conversion? Is there any advantage exporting as ProRes HQ? My feeling is that I should just output to the same 8-bit ProRes that I am starting off with.

To note: some of this footage will be used as part of a documentary which will be going for a film out, so I do in fact want a 23.98 frame rate. Final delivery will be 720p 23.98 10-bit Uncompressed.

    Thanks,

    Zack

    What’s 8 bit Prores?

Did I get that wrong Jeremy? My understanding is that ProRes is 8-bit, ProRes HQ is 10-bit.

All ProRes is 10 bit. ProRes is 145 mb.sec HQ is 220 mb.sec.

A reverse telecine should not recompress your footage at all, it will simply reconstruct it.

OK – as the reverse telecine will just be reconstructing the original ProRes footage, am I right in assuming that there will be no quality lost by staying with ProRes? In other words there is no advantage to exporting as ProRes HQ.

    Thanks

Sorry, no. But my wife and I have had to change our home phone number because of similar interest… 🙂
