Activity Forums Apple Final Cut Pro Legacy Quality Issue

  • Posted by Colin Wiencek on January 13, 2008 at 3:07 am

So I viewed a clip from a DVCPro tape that I shot today, as well as a clip from the same tape but that I had processed through Final Cut. The odd thing was that when I blow the clip up to full screen on my 24′ monitor the original clip looks more pixelized that the exported one. Is this something that I should worry about? Also is there anyway to fix it in the future?
    Thanks,
    -Colin

Viewing how? COMPUTER screen? That is not the way to judge…it needs to be seen on an HD screen via a capture card. If you use a computer screen, the only combination of equipment that gets you true quality is the Matrox MXO and Apple 23″ display. Other than that, you are looking at an RGB proxie, not YUV original.

Are there any firewire 800 capture cards of quality that let you view an external monitor?

[Colin Wiencek] “Are there any firewire 800 capture cards of quality that let you view an external monitor?”

No. Only the AJA IoHD connects via FW800.

For Capture cards you would want an AJA LHe for a minimum.

Then are there any other ways to view a high quality display out of an iMac?

    AJA IoHD

    AJA Io

    AJA IoLA

    AJA IoLD

    Matrox MXO might work

Canopus makes a series of Firewire devices too.

What about running through a tape deck? How does quality compare? Thats how it is done at the Access station I work at. And that is one way I’ve done it before at home.

Yep, that will work too so long as it’s not HDV. You’ll need to set up the Playback offset correctly so the audio and video are in sync.

Yeah, I was thinking about getting a DVCPro tape deck that can take large, medium, and mini (with adapter).
    Thanks for all your help.

I have to get one of these into your hands so you can see for yourself. Or if you are going to NAB, drop by the Matrox booth. I’ll show ya. I didn’t believe it until I saw it.
