  • Quality difference between DVCpro25 & 8bit uncompressed

Posted by David Scott on May 20, 2005 at 3:38 pm

    Hi folks
We currently edit from a variety of media capturing at 8 bit uncompressed from component outputs via an AJA IO box – this has a bit rate of 20MB/sec. This is output the same way to DVCpro 25 tape and sent to our transmission facility. Here they load the tape onto a server at 3.5MB/sec for broadcast.

We are installing a digital library system and the IT department think we should be able to edit using footage caputured with the DVCpro codec at 3.5MB/sec.

This seems like a vast drop in quality, but its all digital they say!

Does anyone have any helpful coments?
    Many thanks

If most of the source is DV, you’re best off capturing it as such. You’ll not gain any quality up-converting the DV to 8 bit… It could be argued that graphics would look better, but then, I’m not seeing a huge difference, however there probably is some on a scope… theory states that when you take a digital recording, then convert an analog out then recapturing it as a digital file, you lose quality… that’s what you are doing when you convert DV to analog then back to digital…
