What is the industry standard method of compressing a 3hr/14min edit from FCP 6 to burn on a 4.7GB DVD? I first exported a QT file (Not self-contained, creating a 22GB file), and imported into DVD Studio Pro where I’ll be creating a menu/chapter markers. The following encoding preferences (following Larry Jordan’s tutorials) created a 5.17GB .m2v video file & 1.44GB .aiff (MPEG), obviously not fitting on a DVD.

MPEG-2 SD Encoding – Mode: Two Pass VBR, Bit Rate: 5.5, Max Bit Rate: 7.2, Motion Estimation: Better

Will I obtain better quality to either drop my current Bit Rate of 5.5 down lower in DVD Studio Pro and re-import, or export from FCP into Compressor before bringing into DVD SP to build my interface? If it’s lowering the Bit Rate in DVD SP is the answer, is there a method to figure out what amount vs trial and error? I understand each edit is unique when it comes to fitting material on a DVD, and unfortunately I was just dealt with my first large scale edit before Blu-ray capacity became standard. I’ve never used Compressor so was not sure if I would maintain better quality with an edit this size.

Next time I’ll be sure to have the talent not be so long winded. Thanks for the advice!

194 minutes is a bit of a push on dvd5. Its certainly possible, but your quality is going to suffer.

Assuming we’re talking NTSC here, I would think you would be in the region of 2.8 for your average rate and 5.5 for your max.

As for audio, I would use 2.0 Dolby Digital at 192kbps.

I always use compressor to encode the files and import into DVDSP.

    good luck.

Create your m2v and ac3 in Compressor. Compressor will give you an estimate size.
