    PLEASE EXCUSE MY IGNORANCE!

I always assumed that you should capture and edit in your native codec, ie I mostly shoot PAL, SD so I capture edit and export in DV PAL.

But as im doing more editing Im becomming aware of codecs like uncomp 8bit and pro res etc.

Now I understand that theses create bigger files, but am I right in assuming that If you have the space on your computer to use these codecs then youd be stupid not to??…I mean why not get the best quality you can.

My second question is do you have to use a codec like this through your entire work flow, or can you capture, edit in DV PAL and then export as say uncomp 8bit???

    thanks.

If your final output is DV, then stay in DV. If your final output is DigiBeta, BetaSP or some other uncompressed output, then you have the option of going to a larger file format. The only thing this gains you is cleaner graphics.

If you’re going back to DV, you’ll actually end up with a more highly compressed file than if you stayed in DV for the full round trip.

If you’re working with graphics, then you want to capture / edit in 8bit. Placing graphics in a DV timeline and then exporting as an 8bit file gains you nothing.

    Thanks

So what if my final output is DVD? if Ive done everything in the dv codec and then export to compressor and/or DVDSP ive heard its often better to do so in animation, or uncomp 8 or 10 bit.

Are you saying its only worthwhile using these codecs for graphics?
ie, export my Motion graphics as 8bit to DVDSP or compressor and export my footage in its original dvpal codec?
