  • Quality Change when playing HDV timeline in Xpress Pro

    Hey Everyone,

I’m hoping someone can help me with this one. I was at a client’s location, and they were having an interesting problem. They were using Xpress Pro 5.2.1, editing in HDV, and when the timeline was not playing, the picture quality of the image in the “Timeline” window (and preview window for that matter) was terrible (very dark, and looked like quarter res). Once you clicked play on the timeline, the picture quality jumped back up to the resolution it should be. They were playing off a USB hard drive, and I thought that that might be the problem, but to copy the 40 gigs worth of info off that drive would have taken a while. This is not a “Quality” issue, as I clicked the “Quality” button, and it did not solve the problem. Has anyone see this problem before? Thanks in advance.

This is a video driver issue. You need to adjust the overlay settings in your video driver options so that the paused image matches the played image.

If you’re seeing a color shift between stopped footage and playback you need to adjust your overlay settings for your graphics card. Check the readme for your version of Avid on what to set the overlay to. You may also be using the wrong driver–check the Readme again to ensure you’re using the right driver.

Regarding quality–this is normal. When you stop playing your footage you’re seeing only 1 field, not a full frame. You are essentially seeing half resolution. That’s why titles look terrible when the playhead is parked and look great when you hit play. It’s normal.

    Michael.
