Quality capture
I am having a quality problem with captured MGPG file clips that were captured from my ALL-IN-Wonder ATI 9600 2006 card. I have been using Pinnacle 10.6 capture option mode to capture the analog video using a break out box and then I import the AVI MGPG file into PP 2.0. The fields seem to be messed up and even when I reverse them, the quality is still questionable. Should I be using other capture settings using my ATI MMC setting on the ATI card or should I change the settings on the Pinnacle capture mode? Dazed and confused. thanks in advance if anyone tackles this. Michael

I am afraid Premiere is not going to be able to help you with editing Mpeg files, at least without an $400 plug-in from Main Concept, but dont spend $ on that as I suspect you are going to have some quality issues using the ATI card…The analog capture feature is kinda just toy, but have fun.
A better solution would be an Analog to Digital converter from Canopus or ADS Tech Pyro AV link. -
Actually they are MJPEG files. My error. Not MPEG. It is a mild compression for AVI file. Pinnacle uses it for thier codec. ATI uses MJPEG and Huffyuv v2.1 for mild compression. I guess more experimentation is going to have to happen on my end. The capture works fine for Pinnacles NLE but not PP.2.0. So really in your opinion, ATI 9600 cards are garbage? They are not garbage if you like gaming 😉
I agree with Mike that both the analog video capture and output on these cards was designed more for use as a consumer VSC than professional video editing. Of course going from analog and recompressing to DV isn’t perfect either…

I dont know what everyone is squalking about. It isnt like basic analog capture requires “expensive” or complicated hardware anylonger. His all in wonder will capture to a simple .avi without a problem, and will look pretty much as good as any other. That said, sorry to here your having problems astro4travel . As a simple test try capture with freeware virtualVCR.

I would use huffYUV with that test and see how the file looks after a quick capture. If it plays fine try importing it into Premiere and check it there. -

I will give it a try! Recently, I have been using the settings of AVI/DV capture with the pinnacle capture mode and then importing the clip into Premiere with much better success. The MJPEG setting was not working for me and causing me problems. -

I have actually recommended the ATI all in wonder to those who are editing for a hobby, it’s a great and cheap way to do it.
But if you try to capture from professionally shot Beta tape, I dare you to compare footages with those of say, an AJA capture capture 😉
That said, everyone has different expectations, and in the end, it seems that the client will usually have the last word…
