  • Quadro 4000 for Mac Issue (Both Apple and Nvidia are stumped)

    Hello.

I’ve got an interesting problem that no one seems to be able to figure out. One of my Quadro 4000 for Mac cards is showing up as “PCIe Lane Width: x1” instead of the x16 it should be in Slot #2 of my MacPro 5.1. The computer recognizes the card and is utilizing the drivers as it should, but I am in no way shape or form getting enough GPU power to perform simple tasks in Resolve (I used to be able to playback Phantom Cine Raw files with at least 2 nodes in realtime and now I can’t play the same files back at more than 14fps without any nodes).

Where it gets whacky is that if I put the Quadro in Slot #1 and the ATI in Slot #2 they both show up as “PCIe Lane Width: x16″… but then the ATI is covering up Slot #3 and I can’t use my I/O.

I’ve tried using a completely fresh OSx, installing the latest drivers plus Cuda, then installing the card… still shows up as x1.

I’ve tried OSx 10.6.5, 10.6.6, and 10.6.7 all completely fresh and it still shows up as a x1.

I’ve heard some rumors that some people have experienced similar problems with RedRocket cards but haven’t been able to find anything concrete… Any suggestions are welcome.

    Marc

I have a similar setup, except on my system I do not have the Decklink i/o card (don’t ask, too hard to explain!).

I had a difficult time getting the Quadro 4000 setup initially. But it’s all working well now. Just for kicks, try this:

-pul out all of the cards except the ATI
-reset NVRAM several times (at least 4) SHUT DOWN & restart holding down cmd+opt+P+R
    – After NVRAM is reset, install ONLY Quadro 4000 card

Check to see if the card has returned to x16 speed. If so, add back one card at a time… storage card, then the decklink.

A shot in the dark, but this is what I’ve had to do to clear PCI issues.

I cleared the NVRAM before (but with the other cards in) and it didn’t help. Just tried it again without anything but the ATI and still no luck.

Just as a matter of interest,
If you put the Quadro in Slot 3, does it come up as x1 or x4?
If you remove the ATTO and/or Decklink is there any change?
Are you able to try a different model of an ATI card in Slot 1?

    Cheers

No change with or without the ATTO or DeckLink in any combination therein. I haven’t tried putting the Quadro in slots 3 or 4… but I can try tomorrow. I guess that could provide some insight on the relationship between the ATI and the Quadro… Do I need to worry about overloading the x4 slot?

Do I need to worry about overloading the x4 slot?

Nah!, it’ll just limit it to 4 x max speed, but it may give you a pointer as to the cause of the problem.

The other thing I might try is to run in a bit of extra power for either the 5770 or the 4000 from somewhere.

    Regards

    Toby,

So in slots 3 and 4 the Quadro shows up as x4, with or without the decklink and ATTO in the other two slots and the ATI in slot 1…

Does it show up as x16 in slot1 by itself? Are you using the same power connector when u swap it back and forth?

I wonder if it’s a weird power supply issue? I have a 5,1 12-core 2.66GHZ, ATI5770 slot-1, Q4000 slot-2… so this should work. Another wild guess is that there may be a power supply or power connector issue. When I installed the Q4000 card the first time I forgot to connect the power connector to it, so it showed up to the system, but was unavailable as a GPU to Resolve. If something happened with 1) the aux power connector OR 2) power traces on the PCIe 16x slot OR 3) power traces on the Q4000 card itself, then the card will show up but NONE of the CUDA chips will power up.

The card, AFAIK, needs power from the PCIe bus and the aux power connector.

What makes me suspicious is that the card is showing up as 1x in the 16x slot, but 4x in the 4x slot. This could indicate a PCIe bus power issue on the 2nd 16x slot or on the card. You mentioned that the Q4000 in the slot-1 position was “ok”. Did you swap out the power connectors of the ATI and the Q4?

Try swapping the aux power connectors to see if the problem follows these cables.

No, it doesn’t follow the cables. The Quadro works x16 in slot 1 with both aux power connectors as does the ATI in slot 2.

    Wow, I’m stumped then… my setup is…

    Mac Pro 5,1 24gb RAM, 10.6.8
    slot-1 ATI 5770
    slot-2 Q4000
    slot-3 Kona 3
    slot-4 Atto 42ES

The ATI & Q4 show up as x16.
