i just got the quad g5, and it crashes about 3 times a day, most of the time with that “you need to hold down the pwer button” meassage over a dimmed out screen and sometimes that full “kernal error” jiberish that fills the screen. any thoughts why. i have the latest os and 5.04 fcp

The Kernal Panics aren’t good… could be many different things, but ruling out bad RAM is where I’d begin. Remove pairs of sticks at a time until stability shows up… Then you know it’s the RAM. If this doesn’t help things, Software reinstallation is probably next. KP’s aren’t common, and can be tough to pin down…

Are you working with anything other than DV?

Assuming that Apple packaged a hardware test with the Quad system you purchased. I would use it to Check everything including RAM. It will even identify which stick is bad. There’s a usually a quick check and a slower more comprehensive test. I would start with quick one first becuase the other can be quite lengthy depending on how much RAM you have installed on your machine.

You have to boot up from the disk that contains the Hardware test and it’s pretty self explanatory from there.
