I’m hopefully going to buy a new Mac Pro soon, and I wanted to know from FCP users out there if they had noticed a profound difference in performing using the Quad Core vs. the 8 core Mac Pros.

I’m sure there’s a difference as it has close to twice the processor power and twice the RAM.

But is it enough to justify the addition $800- on a budget?

I’m especially curious about dealing with HD footage, both compressed and uncompressed. Also any of the other applications on FC Studio, especially color, I’m curious to know about any performance differences there…

    Thanks!

With the september release of Snow Leopard, I would expect a 64 bit version of FCP before too long and the 8 core will probably make a big difference. Meanwhile Compressor should perform better on an 8 core and everything else in the FCS2 package will like the extra RAM.

So the $800 will be well spent as the computer will last at least six months to a year longer than a single quad.
