  • Quad Core Vs. 8 Core…. and a few more questions…

Posted by Josh Evans on March 13, 2009 at 7:39 am

    Hi,

My company will be buying me a sweet new machine within a week or two. It will be used for Final Cut Pro, as Well as Apple Motion 2. But before we spend the bucks, we just wanted to clear up a few things to make the most informed decision (going by the options available when customizing a mac in the apple store)…

    1. The Video Cards…
We do want dual display, but what is the real difference between the GeForce GT 120 512MB and the ATI Radeon HD 4870 512MB ??

Why is there no option to have 2 X ATI ? Does it take up more than one slot or something? And can it do dual display if its alone?

    2. Quad Core Vs. 8 Core. OK of course 8 Core is going to be way better, but we just wanted to see some kind of benchmark i.e. for Rendering times etc. in FCP and Motion. Does anyone know of any online?

Thanks very much for any help.

    Hi,

for the benchmark, here it is.

I’ll be buying the 8-core in a few months. No doubt I’ll take the beast one, especially for video and compositing applications.

    Cheers,

I’d definitely go with the 4870. It’s a much better card, especially for Apple apps.

Currently, having two display cards causes more problems than it’s worth. Just run both monitors off of one card.

The big advantages with the 8-core is first, obvious, but more processors and second, more RAM. If I were going to spend the money, I’d go with the 8-core 2.26 with the ATI and AppleCare.
