    Hi all,

REALLY hoping someone can help…got some bizarre stuff happening with some h.264 clips we’ve re-archived for an old FCP/AE project. Its been a while since we worked on it and it seems now any version of Quicktime above 7.5 is making certain h.264 clips skip or duplicate frames. Has anyone else had this problem?

I’ve kind of solved it on our Tiger machines by running Pacifist and going back to QT 7.5. The clips now play/render fine. However our Leopard machine (maybe it’s an OSX 10.5.6 update conflicting?) won’t shake the problem even if I go back to QT 7.4.

I noticed the added problem on our Tiger machines that because I’ve now got an older QT on there, now any FCP reference QT clips we have don’t play/link up – they just play black! This is a massive project and to re-export these clips would take longer than we’ve actually got to do the job!!

Stuck between a rock and a hard place here. If anyone can help PLEASE DO!

    Thanks,
    Jim.

    Hi Jimmy,
Are putting h264 in the FC time-line?
h264 is not an editing codec.
FC may do the job or may crash.
Nornmally people are transcoding h264 before to bring it to FC.

    Thanks for replying Rafael,

No, I’m not editing with these h264 file sin FCP. They were exported out of FCP a few years back for use in After Effects (I know after effects and FCP don’t like h.264..but I didn’t do the original job!)

The annoying thing is – this frame duplication problem is also occurring when playing these clips DIRECTLY in Quicktime Player and is fixed with older versions of QT (on Tiger machines at least)

The reason I posted it on the FCP forum is because now I’m having to use QT 7.5 on Tiger I’m now having problems viewing/using some OTHER clips (I think they’re DV reference clips) I can’t see them in QT player/FCP or AE.

I was hoping someone else might have had the same problem!?

    Hi Jimmy,
It seems that you have some problems with QT.

[Jimmy Brunger] “I’m now having problems viewing/using some OTHER clips (I think they’re DV reference clips) I can’t see them in QT player/FCP or AE. “
If those are QT Ref movies, QT clearly would tell you so.

[Jimmy Brunger] “The annoying thing is – this frame duplication problem is also occurring when playing these clips DIRECTLY in Quicktime Player and is fixed with older versions of QT (on Tiger machines at least) “
Try to play it with MPGStreamclip.

You’re not kidding! I just don’t know how to remedy the problem! Unless I re-install my OS to an earlier version and taking the hole system back a year or so then I’ve either got unplayable h.264s OR unplayable ref QTs.

What will playing the clips in MPGStreamClip do Rafael?

The last QT version should play every kind of QT movie whatever the version with have been done.
The only thing you need is the codec.
You have the codec so you should be able to play your movies.
If you are able to read well the clips with MPGStreamclip, transcode your files.

I sorted it! (on Tiger at least..) It was my Blackmagic drivers going screwy after I downgraded Quicktime. Uninstalled BMD drivers then reinstalled and now FCP ref movies and my h.264’s are playing happily together now.

    PHEW!

Update for anyone who might come across a similar problem…

I fixed the problem on Leopard aswell – had to uninstall and reinstall Blackmagic software, then disable Perian – which obviously has a problem with Leopard – and now all is well.

I now have a fighting chance of delivering this job on time.

    Hi Jim,

I know this was a while back but I’m having a similar problem to what you were having back in 2009 with FCP playing dupe frames on h264 clips. Only thing is the clips play fine in QT 7.6.6, QT X and Frame Cycler. I thought I might try my luck at downgrading quicktime anyway. How did you do your downgrade? I attempted it yesterday (from 7.6.6 to 7.4) with Pacifist with abysmal results. I’m on Snow Leopard now so I’m not sure your methods would necessarily even apply but I’m kinda desperate and thought I’d give it a shot.

    Thanks!
    Aynsley
