  • QT with Sorenson 3 codec into FCP?

Posted by Robin Rudy on July 21, 2009 at 5:21 am

    Greetings,

I have received a QT from a client with the codec : Sorenson Video 3. This was the full piece from the editor, now they’re bringing me in to do a trailer.

The audio is: QDesign Music (?!?!). I’ve done some research on the cow and online and am still perplexed. Do I need sorenson squeeze to work with a QT with a sorenson 3 codec? Is this an acceptable delivery format from the editor. It is my understanding that a self contained movie exported from FCP is ideal.

I have matched the sequence settings in FCP with the QT:
    Frame size: 640 x 480
    Video Rate: 29.97
Audio Format: 32 bit floating point
    Pixel Aspect: Square
    Field Dom: None

When I bring a clip onto the TL, I can see the image, but cannot hear audio, I have to render to see picture and hear audio.

When I tried to add simple cross fades, there was some amazing Impressionist-like pixelization happening which looked really fantastic and “arty” but will be a no-go for the client.

    What am I missing here?

    Thanks for your help,
    RR

Sorenson Video 3 is not an edit codec. It’s very strange for an editor to use this codec if it’s clear the clip’s going to be re-edited. Ask for a new file in an edit codec: DV, DVCPro50, ProRes (probably the best choice), etc. Also, the audio should be uncompressed 48kHz sample rate.

If getting a new file is impossible, use Compressor to make a ProRes version of what you have. Let your client know quality will suffer if you have to use the Sorenson Video 3 file.

    Hi John–

    Much appreciated.

    RE your note:

What do you think about asking for a self contained movie, in your experience is this the best mster QT to deliver to a client at the end of the job:

Yes, you want a self-contained mov. If the provider is using FCP, then a file with Current Settings, self-contained will be fine. There’s no need to transcode to another codec. If the original is DV then export DV. If it’s ProRes export that, etc.
