I just shot a few commercials. I received the uncompressed masters. For the directors cut, I redid the logo in after effects and added it to the uncompressed master in final cut pro (when I imported the master in the timeline FCP adjusted the sequence to match the settings).

When I export an uncompressed master, it just doesn’t look as sharp and rich. The settings are the same:
    16-bit Integer (Big Endian), Stereo (L R), 48.000 kHz
    Apple FCP Uncompressed 10-bit 4:2:2, 720 x 486 (640 x 480), Millions.

Shouldn’t it be exactly the same quality since there has been no additional compression?

    Any ideas?

How did you export it? That’s where compression might have been done again… if you choose file/export/QT movie and use current settings, no re-compression should happen. Any other export will result in a recompression. If the logo runs throughout then a re-compression has to happen in a render which happens either in FCP or during the export. Also only judge quality on an external monitor… no way to see what you have using your computer display.

And when you put the file in a sequence, you noted that the line above the clip in the timeline window was grey, right? If not, then a recompression happened during the export. Could happen if say, the file was created from a program other than FCP. (the codec wouldn’t have been the same)

    thanks Jerry-
I exported a quicktime movie with current settings. The logo was exported from AE with the same settings (10 bit uncompressed – no rendering) but it was only at the end anyway.

the imported commercials had Apple FCP 10-bit uncompressed as the codec.

I did try exporting a movie with qt conversion and used 10 bit uncompressed as the setting and it did seem to look better.
