  • QT export has interlace artifacts

Posted by Brad Mirman on March 2, 2010 at 9:35 pm

    I am using the Canon t2i 1920 x 1080 – 30frames. I am exporting the AVCHD files using MPEGStreamclip:

    Export to MOVE
    Compression: Apple Intermmediate Codec
    1920 x 1080 (HDTV 1080i)
    Interlaced scaling is checked

The clip is from a camera mount on the hood of a car. When I drag into my FCE timeline the footage looks fine. Very smooth. I also have sped up the clip 200%. When I export to a quicktime movie I keep getting the artifact lines. I have tried several different export setting in Quicktime conversion but the exported footage always has artifacts.

    Any thoughts?

Set the canvas to 100% and look at it. You’e working in an interlaced format. It’s going to be interlaced.

    All the best,

I’m not sure I understand. When I look at the MOV as filmed on the AVCHD card it plays smoothly even when I view it in QT full screen. It’s only after I export that I see the lines

It doesn’t matter what you see in the QT player or how it displays. All that’s important is what the material is. It’s interlaced. View it in Final Cut with the canvas set to 100%. That’s a correct display of the image. You will see interlacing because your media is interlaced.

    All the best,

Then what is the solution? Should I deinterlace when exporting to QT

    [Brad Mirman] “I am using the Canon t2i 1920 x 1080 – 30frames. I am exporting the AVCHD files using MPEGStreamclip: “

The T2i does NOT shoot in AVCHD it shoots H.264

Not the best codec to export to.

I would recommend using compressor and converting to ProRes.

    Hindsight is always 1080p

I guess I should have stated that I am using FCE so I don’t have ProRes. There doesn’t seem to be a forum for FCE here and I thought the exporting issue would remain the same. Can’t figure out why the clips look so smooth as recorded on the camera and so interlaced after export

    Any help would be appreciated

I deinterlaced the sequence in the time line and it now plays much smoother when viewed in exported QT on my computer.

you should keep in mind what your final delivery format is going to be – if it is to be displayed in the same format as it was captured (which is 1080i60) then you do not want to deinterlace the footage as that halves the resolution

for previews on a computer screen deinterlacing is a good temporary solution but don’t let those artifacts put you off before you’ve watched the video in it’s intended format – it’s just the computer struggling to play video that’s meant for a different kind of display, it doesn’t mean there are problems in the video itself….
