Quick question on Quick time renders. I’m currently using my Sony HD-SR12 to shoot short videos (1-3mins)in HD 1920×1080 60i. I’m then emailing these files to clients for viewing on their computers. Most people are fine with me sending the MP4 format (Sony AVC with the HD_Internet 1280×720-30P_2MBPS Template). The quality is outstanding and the file size is very manageable (usually under 30MB).

I’m trying to duplicate the quality and minimal file size for .MOV renderings for people who desire that format. However, I’m having the hardest time finding a setting that comes close to MP4 experience. “The “unconstrained” setting blows the file size and the other drop down choices are not getting me the quality in need.

Does anybody have a recommendation that could get my .MOV’s in the same ballpark (file size / quality) as my MP4’s…..

Thanks for any help or suggestions.

Not from within Vegas. You’ll need to buy QuickTime Pro in order to make MPEG4 MOV files (Vegas doesn’t support this). That means you’ll have to render twice. Once in Vegas and then again in QuickTime Pro.

    BUT!!!

There is no reason at all to make MOV files for Mac users. Mac’s can play MP4 files in QuickTime just fine. Give them the MP4 file from Vegas and tell them to double click on it and it will play.

Thanks John…My problem isn’t with MAC users per say – it’s seems more to be with PC users. Every so often I’m getting feedback that they only hear the “audio” and see no video. Not sure if this is a plug in issue on their end. They seem to view the .MOV file without a problem…go figure?

If I do have to render twice, is the MP4 render in Vegas the one to use for the original render, or should I choose another format?

It is most likely because the media player that Microsoft ships has taken over this extension even though it can’t play it! Tell them to open the MP4 file in QuickTime and it will work fine. If they want to be able to double-click on it, tell them to associate MP4 files with QuickTime for the future. You should not have to buy more software and double render just because their PC’s are mis-configured.

You should select something higher quality, preferably lossless if you are going to render again. I would render to QuickTime Photo-JPEG and bring that into QuickTime Pro and render as AVC/h.264 (MPEG4).

    John –

Sorry to be behind the curve on this, but where do I find the “QuickTime Photo-JPEG“? I’m using Sony Vegas Pro 10, but can’t seem to find that selection….

    Thanks again.

I’m not John but I can answer that one for you.
Pick MOV in the Save As Type box, click Custom and, in the Video tab, pick Photo – JPEG in the Video Format box.
    Set the other options accordingly.

“Tell them to open the MP4 file in QuickTime and it will work fine.”

The free VLC media player (From videolan.org) will also play the MP4 files if your clients are adverse to installing QT.
