    Greetings,

My G5 just died and Apple Care kindly replaced it with a Mac Pro 2x2GHz Dual Core Xeon, 1G 66Mhz DDR-FB-DIMM. Apple migrated my old OS to my new machine, which included: OS 10.4.8, FCP 5.0.4., QT 7.1.3. (note: Apple also is ordering me the latest FCP studio migration offer that recently expired from Apple today or tomorrow. so I’ll soon be on FCP 5.1).

I am attempting to configure my new machine as cleanly as possible and I’m following The Cow’s article by Jerry Hofmann “Acheiving a Rock Solid FCP System.” I had a few questions about it for anyone who is familiar with his recommendations and I’d appreciate any feedback.

First, the scenario: I was planning to do a “dual boot” install as Jerry suggested: to install one OS, FCP, and QT combo that runs effectively, then install a separate OS (apparantly, you can do this on the same drive as the other if they’re partitioned?) that you can put all our newest FCP, OSX, QT updates on and fall back on the first one if the updates conflict at all. Questions:

    1) I was going to install the two versions of FCP/OS/QT on an external firewire drive separated into 2 partitions. Would that work OK for these purposes?

    2) During these installs, do I have to worry about the best OS configuration for other programs I may use at the same time as FCP: Motion, Photoshop, DVD Studio Pro, Safari? Or do I just install versions of these programs on the separate drives along with different versions of FCP so they’re accessible along with FCP? Otherwise, seems to me if I use a startup drive that just has FCP installed, how will I access these programs simultaneously? Before, I had all these apps installed on my one system hard drive (all media on other drives), but seems like that would be unusable when booting from the new, FCP drives I create.

    3) Once I get the new FCP 5.1, is there an OS>FCP>QT configuration that seems to be stable? I figured that would be my “fall back” drive, then I could install newer versions of those apps on a separate drive.

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

    Thanks,

    John Couture

    Rafael,

It’s in the very first edition of the Creative Cow Magazine. If you hunt around the web site, you can find it. I believe I downoaded it as a PDF. I’d send it to you, but I printed it out and don’t have the pdf.

    Good luck!
