  • Q: In Maximizing Render Speed: Does the Video Card Help?

    Hi Creative Cow People,

After purchasing a MacPro – with Quad Zeon 2.66GHz CPUS – 3GB of RAM and a 500GB drive in addition to the 250GB boot drive – PLUS installing the crossgrade to the Intel build of FCP 5.1.1 – I am amazed at how it does not seem that the render speed has been significantly increased over what was the case with a 2.0 GHz DP G5 box.

The only thing missing in the equation is the Radeon X1900 PCI-Express graphics card because, according to suppliers I have talked with, it’s not going to be shipping for another three to five weeks. Thus, I am currently running with the NVIDIA GeForce 7300 GT that ships with the system.

My Question: Can I expect the rendering trime to be reduced when the Radeon X1900 graphics card is introduced to the system?

And, in the ‘read the manual’ department’, is there anywhere you might point me to find out how best to maximize rendering throughput?

    Thanks!

Not with FCP yet. It doesn’t rely on the graphics card yet like Motion does. You will get overall improved performance by running the ATI, especially in Motion.

FCP 6 will most likely start taking advantage of the graphics cards. More than likely being released some time next year.

    Hi Walter,

Hey thanks! for the quick and informative response. Your input is much appreciated. As it happened, my G5 CPU konked out 2 days before the MacPro showed up – so it’s in the shop and I could not run an A/B test on the same materials. When it comes back, I’ll give it a go and post the results here on the CreativeCow FCP forum.

Ya know.. LAST NIGHT I was re-watching your tutorials on Traveling Mattes in FCP and was so happy to revisit the excellent info and hints on how to make use of Alpha and Luma mattes – PLUS the clue in adding a drop-shadow.

    Best Wishes,
