  • Q. how to load chapter markers?

Posted by Gilles Gagnon on October 23, 2012 at 8:52 pm

I’ve rendered an mpg for DVDA,
I loaded the file in DVDA but no markers came along with it. Mind you, I had renamed the file… but… I did rename ALL the files (ac3, etc).

When i hit the Load Markers icon in DVDA, nothing happens.

I used VASST Ultimate to recreate the marker file, named it filename.sfl, hit the load chanpters icon in DVDA… nada.

Is there another way of loading the markers? how can I ensure the markers file is valid?… has markers in it?

    What am i missing?

    Cheers,
    Gilles

    It’s not “filename.sfl” it’s “filename.mpg.sfl”.

Gilles, if you renamed them after the render, that’s where you went wrong.

Ahh…. this explains the mystery then, since that’s what I did.
I rendered and renamed all the files.

Any way of determining what filename it’s looking for?
at the time, the name had become convoluted with rev numbers, etc. hence renaming it.

I thought I’d be clever and do a “save markers” to create a file, then use the Vasst util to create a new markers file and use it to replace the file created in step 1.
One would think that “load markers” would use the same filename as what it creates but.. doesn’t seem to be the logic used.

Gilles, when you do an mpeg-2 render with markers, it creates the mpg file (*.mpg) as well as the marker file (*.mpg.sfl).
These two are tied to each other (internal coding) and you can’t rename one after the fact because of this.
If you forgot to include the markers in the original render, then use the method that John outlined in a previous post.

It is looking for the exact same filename as the mpg or ac3 file with the .sfl appended. So if your video is xyz123.mpg then the chapter file should be xyz123.mpg.sfl and it must be in the same folder.

    Thanks John,
I’m aware of this. That’s why it’s puzzling. I renamed all 3 files accordingly, yet, no markers.

No worries, I re-rendered as I had to make a mod and it all worked as expected.
    Thanks for your help.

I was able to verify this this. I rendered the mpg file with markers and was able to see them in DVDA. I then closed DVDA without saving and renamed the files and tried again. DVDA did not show the markers this time. I renamed the files back to the original names and the markers showed up in DVDA. If I open the test.mpg.sfl file with an external editor, I see the marker names and also the reference to the file name of the mpg file. So even though DVDA is looking for the same file name, the sfl file is referencing the original file name still.

    Thanks Mark!
That’s what I’ll do next time i’m in this same pickle. I’ll open the sfl and “re”-rename all the files according to the name found there.

    This helps.

Here is a screenshot of the sfl file in Notepad. I highlighted the filename.
