  • Q. about Panasonic DVCPRO-50 VTRs & 24p & 30p

Apologies if this is the wrong forum (there isn’t a “DVCPRO-50” forum?), but if anyone can answer/comment on this I’d appreciate it:

If I record the “live” SDI output of my Sony DSR-450WSL camcorder (when the cam is in its 24p or 30p PSF progressive mode) on a Panasonic DVCPRO-50 deck such as the AJ-SD93 or AJ-SD930, will FCP be able to capture from the deck’s tape via Firewire and handle the video “correctly” … similar to if the tape had been originally been shot in a SDX-900 in 24p/30p mode?

I hope that question makes sense. 😉

    Hi Peter,

It will record it as DVCPRO50, however the flag information will not be there so your extraction will be manual anf you will need to identify the A frame on every clip for the Cinema tools. Or you can just edit in 60i.

    Hope that helps,

    Jan

Thanks your answer, Jan; and I have a follow-up question for you or others:

We’ll most likely use my DSR-450WSL cam’s 30p mode for this particular shoot.

When I record my cam’s live SDI 30p output with a AJ-SD93 deck in DVCPRO-50 mode, and capture & edit it in FCP in a 60i timeline, will the resulting video look as good/identical as if it were instead originated as a 30p “flagged” recording in-camera (such as shot with a SDX-900)?

I’m not comparing the two cams (DSR-450WSL & SDX-900) — we all know which is better 🙂 — just whether there’s a quality trade-off editing 30p video originated from an external SDI source and recorded on a deck vs. 30p video flagged and recorded in a cam?

If it matters, the final edit will be distributed via the web & DVD only, not broadcast. The video will very short, just a few minutes, most of it involving chromakeying.

Again, apologies if my question isn’t clear, and thanks again.

Jan, are you saying that no matter what “mode” the Sony source camera is in, the deck will still just record plain old DVCPRO50 (interlaced 29.97)?

    Thanks,
    Thomas

That is correct- 30p 24p are created by the CCD imager- the deck is always 29.97 60i NTSC DVCPRO50.
