I am puzzled once again with the result of a video after compressing to mpeg2..

Here are some of my settings when compressing
Filters added to DV: De-Interlace (Lower (even) to all footage.
    Total Vtracks: 8

    File/export/using QT conversion
Format: mpeg 2 @ double pass, 5.5mbps to 7.5mbps set at “better” (from the good, better best options) motion estimation.

    Edited w/fcp 5.0.

    Here are my issues:

Are my interlace options correct? It seems as if i cant still see a little jag ed edges. Frames that were cropped in the filter tab to appear as letter box, i see edges around my video frame and lines (as a border) all the way around the video frame. Key framing also appears jagged when moving from right to left across/up/down the screen. I have multiple frames open each one timed and key framed to move after or around each other.

Can anyone help me understand what I’m doing wrong? I would post my video up on the net for you to see but do not have site to host it on.. This is the first time i run across this problem. Its is the first time i use more key framing with cropped multiple frames appearing at the same time and moving.

Any one? Don’t be shy now..

How are you viewing the results of your mpeg2 conversion?
It needs to be your NTSC monitor, not the computer monitor.

If you have stuff moving around alot, why would you not use “best”
    as the setting for motion?

Also, I have gotten much better results going to Compressor,
one pass, changing the GOP to 7 and use IBP frames. Read the section
in the DVD Studio Pro manual about compression settings to learn more.

I do not have a NTSC monitor. I know your suppose to view on it but i don’t have the funds for it right now. I use a 17″ flat HD monitor instead. And i see the glitches on it too. I see it playing it back on QT on my 20″ flat apple screen and my 17″ hd tv screen. I will compress again using the “best” option setting for motion under quality settings.

I have not trying using compressor it self. DO just convert my FCP 5.0 file to reg-mpg file then compress in compressor? Or do i covert video file to mpg2 and then re-compress in compressor?

About the GOP changes/one pass, etc. i take it these are setting in compressor right?
I will look into this. I will also go back and check my sequence setting, etc as i might have something conf incorrectly..

To get your file into compressor, go straight from FCP file menu – export to compressor. Then set your settings and compress.
If you want to run compressor solo, w/o FCP in the background, export a quicktime movie with current settings, either self-contained or not. A non self-contained file is MUCH smaller but references the original media and render files – so it needs to be on the same machine. Open compressor and import the QT movie.
