putting together the right system?
Hi all,
I’m relatively new to the world of FCP and need to put together a system to edit a multi-cam concert series. The client is shooting SD on DVCAM (possible HD in the future). Exporting edited show to DVCAM.
What I’ve come up with, and I welcome everyones advice, is the following :
Mac Pro 3.2 GHz Quad Core with 6 GHz ram
2 TB Raid Tower (4×500 Seagate SATA drives from Mac Guru)
Black Magic HD Extreme video card
Raid card (not specified yet)I’m thinking (hoping) this might be the right configuration to work with. My biggest concern is outputting to tape from FCP with no dropped frames. From all I’ve read, there’s usually a solution to resolving the dropped frames issue. I just want to be sure that I’m not introducing any inherent problems with the hardware on my list.
Lastly… I am considering the Kona 3 video card after reading several posts. It’s a bit beyond my budget, but there seem to be quite a few fans in the forum.
Thanks for any input, advice and experiences you have to offer.

If you’re shooting DVCAM and finishing DVCAM then it seems you don’t need a video card right now. You could handle all that via firewire.
And for your drive and raid card, you should search posts here and then call one of the companies recommended (many advertise here) and get the whole solution from them.
If you don’t want inherent problems, then I think you should start simple entering the FCP world, and add on as your expertise expands.
You could also go to a Value Added Reseller and get a complete solution, configured for you and ready to go.

If this is your first system, I highly recommend purchasing from a VAR. that’s what I did when I purchased my first and second systems.
