Putting together new system
Posted by Rick Diamond on August 12, 2005 at 5:42 pmI’m considering putting together a new system. Couple of questions: What are the advantages of the Kona 2 (other than HD) as compared to the IO? Is it faster? More reliable/stable?Is the Kona 2 fully compatible with FCP5 and Tiger? Can I output to NTSC monitor like the IO? Thanks.

—Is it faster? KONA has DVCPro HD acceleration that the Io cannot do.
—More reliable/stable? No, both are reliable and stable
—Is the Kona 2 fully compatible with FCP5 and Tiger? Yes and so is Io
—Can I output to NTSC monitor like the IO? Yes

August 12, 2005 at 10:32 pmIn my opinion, if you are doing anything but HD, you should only buy the AJA I/O. The possible exception to this is if you are doing stricly SDI material from Dig Beta, Beta SX, DVCam from pro decks like DSR-1800 and DSR-2000 that have SDI out with embedded audio. If you are doing mixed format work, that includes Beta, 3/4″, VHS, etc, they you are nuts to buy the Kona 2 if you are not doing HD work. Make your life simple – get the I/O, and be happy. And if you don’t listen to me, and wind up getting the Kona 2 anyway – make sure to buy the K-Box option.

August 13, 2005 at 12:16 amBob has a very good point here. The KONA 2 is designed around digital I/O and HD. The only analog is an RCA audio output that is designed for monitoring only.
You need to convert any analog signal to SDI to get it input, so there are add ons (converters needed) for analog I/O. That said many people use the I/O as the analog part of the Kona 2 and run them hand in hand. This gives you a very flexible package and lets you service any customer needs.

August 13, 2005 at 3:14 amIo gives you every analog and digital I/O in SD format. It is very flexible and can be used as a standalone converter as well. If you are planning for HD, get the Io now and then add the Kona2 later and you’ll have a real kickass setup.

August 13, 2005 at 2:25 pmThanks to all. I didn’t realize that the Kona 2 didn’t have analog input. That would have been a big mistake!

I have this same system…with all current firmware and Mac OS…it is great. Waiting to get my hands on HD, but the time is getting ever closer that I will need it.

August 16, 2005 at 8:40 pmHi,
Trying to decide between the IO LD and the KonaLS.I will be using it primarily for capturing PAL DigiBeta using either a Sony J30-SDI or DVW-M2000. Audio will be coming in embedded over SDI.
For output, I will need to go back to DigiBeta via SDI, and occasionally out to S-Video or VHS.
Of course I need to monitor the video, via component or composite.
I do not need analog inputs, nor do I care about AES (what kind of equipment uses AES anyway??).
Seems like both products will work for me.
The IO LD advantage of not taking up a PCI slot is clear, in addition to handling some of the processing.
I’m not quite sure what the advantage of the KonaLS would be for me.
Any advice or suggestions gladly accepted.
Thanks,
Matthew -

August 17, 2005 at 6:19 pmHi Matthew-
Either one will work well for you. The Kona LS has an advantage over the Io LD in that it supports a second Desktop output for Photoshop work, etc. But, the Io LD does not, as you stated, take up a precious slot in your G5.
If you do not need the analog inputs available on the Kona LS, the Io LD may be just the ticket for you, as it contains not only SDI out, but 2-ch. SPDIF out as well as 10bit analog component or composite/YC out and 2-ch. analog audio out on XLR.
Call us if you need any more info!
Thank you,
