Hi, I’m putting my first suite wishlist together for the producers for a television show going into production. It’ll be broadcast, but whether the syndicates do it in SD or HD is unclear (my bet is SD to start out). Perusing through the forum, I have a general idea of what i need, tower-wise, but as far as broadcast CC, I’m in the dark. I’ve only been able to CC on calibrated LCD monitors running off of the same video card as the computer, so I’d really appreciate any advice on the next step up.

    I’m recommending:

Intel Mac Pro 8-core 2.26 GHz
    16 gig RAM
    ATI Radeon HD 4870 card
    4x2TB Internal HDs, soft raided

-Any advice on a broadcast monitor / blackmagic card?

I’m not sure what the final budget is, but anything in the moderate range I’m sure is a good start. Also, my guess is that the producer’s going to get a lot of this second-hand/used/refurbished, so waiting for the new gen coming out won’t be much of a factor.

Thanks, guys. Always appreciate the advice.

    The mac is fine,

you just need 8 GB Ram (4×2) leave the 4 banks open, just in case you work with Motion or After effects.
You need a good capture card such as Aja (my first choice LHI) or decklink. You need a good monitor (SD/HD LCD Panasonic or similar), a small sound mixing device and good or very good speakers (Genelec or similar) My choice would be Yamaha MSP5.
Don’t go for an internal raid. The raid gets hot inside and lasts when you work 12 hours a day with it approx. 4-5 years.
Go for an external fibrechannel raid. I know this is expensive, but what I’ve learned out of my experience is: I’ve never regretted the most expensive things I’m working with.

    I hope this helps

You certainly don’t need a fibrechannel RAID. Click on some of the links on the sides of this page for storage options. Also check out iStorage Pro, Other World Computing and G-Tech.

I just saved you a few thousand dollars.
